Grey Matters meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month from 6:45 to 9 p.m. unless otherwise noted in the calendar below. A complimentary light meal is provided starting at 6:45 p.m. Please join us — no invitation is required. Upon your arrival, please check with the receptionist for the exact location within the building.

Please bring your favorite chili to share for our annual chili cook-off contest! Prizes will be awarded. Grated cheese, sour cream, cornbread, Fritos, chopped onions, and salad will be provided by Grey Matters. Sharing as time permits.

NBTS's Brain Tumor Support Conversations

We hope you'll be able to join us for this online support group for the brain tumor community. All members of the community are welcome, including all current and former patients and care partners.

This support group, facilitated by volunteers Adam Hayden and Lisa O'Leary, provides a welcoming space where patients and loved ones can talk about the feelings and emotions that accompany any aspect of the brain tumor experience. The topic for this month's conversation will be finding meaning after diagnosis, treatment, and even loss.

Deb Lewin, a national ParaEquestrian champion and master NLP Practitioner, is a much sought-after motivational speaker, drawing her inspiration and courage from her life’s experiences. In 1996, Deb was broadsided by another vehicle, resulting in a brain injury with left side paralysis and impaired vision and hearing. She refers to this, as her “Opportunity.”

Dr. Downum will be speaking about the psychophysiology of acute brain injury. Biofeedback provides a means for monitoring and then changing one’s own physiology to manage stress, sleep, and pain.

The Bluebonnet Retreat

The Bluebonnet Retreat offers, at no charge, a unique experience for adult cancer patients. During the three-day, two-night camp, attendees are provided a creative, educational atmosphere of support with a focus on wellness. The retreat is a special project of Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Hurst-Euless-Bedford and is funded through donations. Ambulatory adults age 18 or older who have been diagnosed with cancer within the past five years are invited to attend. The retreat is held each year in the fall and spring.

Attendance is limited to 24 and first time campers receive priority. An online application can be found here. Application deadline is March 6.

Reel Recovery Fishing Retreat in Glen Rose, TX
 

Reel Recovery is a national non-profit organization that conducts free fly-fishing retreats in Texas and Oklahoma for men recovering from all forms of cancer. Click here to read the flyer for more information.

Grey Matters to Firefighters Campaign

UPDATE: This event on April 25 has been cancelled and will not be rescheduled.

 Come support DFW Firefighters as they compete in various training exercises to raise awareness and funds for brain cancer research. It will be a family fun event! Free admittance. Kids will enjoy touching and sitting on the fire trucks, ambulance, and other emergency vehicles and seeing our brave firefighters in their full gear. Donations and sponsorships are available. Research shows that firefighters are 32% more likely to being diagnosed with brain cancer than the general population.

The Nick Gonzales Foundation for Brain Tumor Research's 13th Annual Golf Tournament, Dinner & Auction

Head for the Cure is dedicated to raising hope, awareness, and funding in the fight against brain cancer. Our 5K events are not only successful fundraisers, but unique tributes to those who are fighting brain cancer and those who have lost their battles. Funds raised from the event benefit the Brain Tumor Trials Collaborative (BTTC) and UT Southwestern.

The BT5K Breakthrough for Brain Tumors Run and Walk is the American Brain Tumor Association's national signature fundraising event, taking place in cities coast to coast. Your participation allows the ABTA to provide vital brain tumor resources to patients and their families, fund promising research studies, and conduct nationwide brain tumor educational programs.

Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Support Services is hosting EMBRACE, a bi-annual survivorship program, virtually this fall. Each week for seven weeks, it will cover a different topic relevant to patients and caregivers, whether you are just starting treatment, are in the throes of treatment, or have completed treatment. You are welcome to attend as many sessions that interest you.

NBTS Ft. Worth Brain Tumor Walk

New Location: Virtual 

The National Brain Tumor Society will host its annual walk virtually this year due to the pandemic. We will honor and remember our brain tumor warriors, share stories, and hear from members of this community all in the comfort of our homes.

You can show your support for this critical mission as part of the "Grey Matters No TX Support Group" with team captain Karen Kuryla. All registered participants will still receive a t-shirt and qualify for fundraising incentives.

ABTA’s Virtual Patient and Family Meeting will be held on Saturday, November 14. This online educational meeting is offered at no charge and is available to brain tumor patients, survivors, caregivers, and health care professionals.
